Along with Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Jack DeJohnette, and Tony Williams, the great Alphonse Mouzon staked his claim among the first wave of fusion drummers through his work with Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, and a long and renowned tenure with Larry Coryell and Eleventh House.

Now Mouzon is battling Stage 3-4 Neuroendocrine Carcinoma, a rare form of cancer that has been further complicated by a return of prostate cancer, anemia, and kidney failure, ruling out the continuation of chemotherapy. After his doctors concluded that he has little chance of survival using traditional Western medicine, Mouzon elected to try the alternative Gerson Therapy at the C.H.I.P.S.A. Gerson Therapy Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico.

Gerson Therapy is controversial, and isn’t recognized as a viable cancer treatment by the American Cancer Institute. However, considering Mouzon’s grim diagnosis, he has launched a crowdsourcing campaign to cover the costs of his treatments. Please go here if you’d like to donate to this effort to give a true drumming legend some hope during this very difficult time.
