Perhaps the most anticipated new drumset design in recent years has been the Black Panther Design Lab series from Mapex. First hinted at during the 2018 Winter NAMM show, the goal of the drums is to provide a unique level of customization with multiple options for hoops, mounts, and other design innovations that promise a better control of the instrument’s sound.

Drumming luminaries Jeff Hamilton, Greg Hutchinson, Chris Adler, Craig Blundell, ClausHessler, Alex Landenburg, Lee Pearson, Russ Miller, Rashid Williams and Kirk Covington have adopted the Black Panther Design Lab drums.


The official unveiling of these amazing instruments in the US takes place at 9 AM EST on Thursday, November 15 at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, and will be broadcast live via the Mapex USA Facebook page. Additional live streams which can be viewed at will take place throughout the day on Nov. 16, featuring booth walk-throughs and interviews with artists, attendees, and Mapex personnel. On Nov. 17, Russ Miller will host product demonstrations at 10 AM and 2 PM EST. These events will also be live on Facebook and Finally, on Nov. 18, Mapex will release footage featuring highlights of the Jeff Hamilton Trio’s PASIC performance from the previous day, allowing viewers to see and hear the Black Panther Design Lab drums in a full performance setting.
